An academic & recreational camp supporting dyslexic kids ages 6 to 14 in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Academic Program

The academic program focuses on each individual student and their specific learning needs in a daily one-hour one-on-one Orton-Gillingham tutorial.  Orton-Gillingham instruction is a multisensory approach to teaching, specifically reading writing and spelling skills, that is diagnostic and prescriptive, sequential and structured, and tailors the teaching to the learning styles of each individual student.

Trained Orton-Gillingham professional language therapists work consistently with the students, directly teaching, reviewing and expanding their knowledge of the structure of English.

Daily lessons are reinforced in a tutor-proctored study hall that acts as an extension of each day’s lesson.  Those students, who have not yet mastered the skill of touch typing, will be offered instruction through a multisensory approach.

Before the end of each day, students will have an opportunity to apply what they are learning by reading aloud and silently with the staff.  In order to build application and fluency, students need daily practice.

Daily Activities Program

The daily activities program focuses on exposing students to teambuilding and extracurricular activities such as swimming, creative art projects, woodshop, and outdoor education.

Afternoons and weekends may include activities such as free swim, independent art projects, gymnastics, kayaking, tubing and rafting in local waterways, hiking and trail blazing, rock climbing, primitive camping, and ropes courses.

Our activities’ staff is trained and knowledgeable about the fields they teach and supervise as well as understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the uniqueness of dyslexics.
